The effect of electronic cigarette on smoking cessation: a review study

Background: Smoking is the main cause of many deaths and diseases around the world, andsmokers are about two to four times more susceptible to diseases. The electronic cigarette is anelectronic device for delivering nicotine with a battery and works similar to a cigarette, except thatby heating a solution containing nicotine and delivering an aerosol that a person inhales, ECsimulates the act of smoking. It has become popular among smokers who want to avoid thedangers of smoking. This review study was conducted with the aim of the effectiveness ofelectronic cigarettes in quitting smoking.Methods: This study was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, Science Direct, and Googlescholar databases. The types of articles written from ۲۰۱۴to۲۰۲۲ were reviewed and a total of ۱۶۷articles were found. The title, abstract, and full text of the findings were studied in order to checkthe inclusion criteria, finally۲۷ articles related to the main topic were found and the articles thatwere not related were excluded from this study. Finally, the studies conducted are reviewed andanalyzed.Result: Participants who used e-cigarettes were more likely to have abstained from smoking for atleast six months. In the research conducted, none of the serious side effects related to its use havebeen reported. Also, most of the conducted studies showed that electronic cigarettes, especially thesecond-generation types, can reduce the symptoms of smoking cessation and the desire to use themin laboratory environments. In the reviewed studies, ۵۵.۵% of them reported the positive effect ofelectronic cigarettes on the success of quitting.Conclusion: (E-cigarettes) were originally designed as a smoking cessation aid, and evidenceshows that those containing nicotine can help quit smoking. It is also significantly safer thantraditional cigarettes. There is uncertainty about whether electronic cigarettes lead to a completecessation of smoking, and more research is needed.
