Why Legal Therapeutic Abortion is Necessary?

Therapeutic abortions can be done to end a pregnancy when the mother's life is in danger or if the baby has abnormalities involving the major disability. In Iran, therapeutic abortion is allowed for medical reasons with the permission of the government. The purpose of this study is to explain the necessity of therapeutic abortion by investigating the frequency of genetic abnormalities lead to therapeutic abortion in Ilam province. Data of this cross-sectional study collected from the files of pregnant mothers who reffers to the legal medicine organization of Ilam province. The analysis revealed that most of the cases resulted in therapeutic abortion due to fetal abnormalities. The most common fetal abnormalities leading to therapeutic abortion were central nervous system anomalies, Down syndrome, beta-thalassemia major, and hydrops fetalis. The results of this study show that legal therapeutic abortion, genetic counseling, and prenatal genetic testing are vital in preventing the birth of children with genetic abnormalities and preventing the cost and suffering of treatment for both the family and the government.
