Improving the Power Quality in Distribution Grids Using Multilevel Converter-Based Unified Power Quality Conditioner

Power Quality (PQ) is one of the major concernsin the power grids, where various devices such as DynamicVoltage Restorer (DVR) and Uninterruptible Power Supply(UPS) have been designed and used to control PQ. Althoughthese devices have satisfactory performance, they have someproblems such as the installation restriction and the high cost.This paper proposes a multilevel converter-based Unified PowerQuality Conditioner (UPQC) to solve the power qualitydisturbances. Proposed UPQC impact on the power qualityparameters is discussed in the IEEE 14-bus system. In order toverify the results, PSCAD/EMTDC software is used to simulatethe system.
